Apothecary ~ Valerian

Part of taking back my life was beginning to grow various herbs for my soaps and lotions, but also for the family medicinal use.

The original 10 plants I started were:

  1. Aloe Vera
  2. Peppermint
  3. Thyme
  4. Rosemary
  5. Roman Chamomile
  6. Calendula
  7. Sage
  8. French Lavender
  9. Valerian
  10. Comfrey

The Valerian took 2 years before I could harvest the root for maturity. This was done in an above ground planter to easily remove the root without damaging it, when the time was right.

The only herb on the list above that I do not use for both my body & bath products and medicinally is Valerian. This is strictly used as an herbal medicinal tea for those nights we need to sleep better or a light tea in the day for anxiety. Thankfully we laugh a lot, so our anxiety is not usually a problem!

As time went on, I added many more herbs and now utilize the following mixture of herbs for when we need a night time tea: Catnip, Chamomile, Valerian & Peppermint or Spearmint for taste, because both Catnip and Valerian are very earthy tasting.  Here is a short clip on the Valerian plant. Enjoy!
